Professor Rob and 3 competitors made the trek down to Long Beach California to attend the 2014 IBJJF World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships in the last week of May. Island Top Team's head instructor had some goals when we opened our doors less than a year ago, among them was one that our standard of skill be world class, and another was that eventually our academy would become a destination to anyone seeking elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training not just for Nanaimo, or the central Vancouver Island area, but all of North America. Both are being realized sooner than we anticipated. If you've followed our competition team's exploits, you already know our students possess world class skills, but did you know that Island Top Team has quickly become a destination of choice for BJJ practitioners across the continent seeking a deeper understanding of jiu-jitsu? Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners who happen to visit Nanaimo are making Island Top Team a must-see stop during their time on beautiful Vancouver Island. Perhaps it's due to our policy of not charging out-of-towners to drop in on our classes, perhaps it's due to the fact that we're the only option for legit BJJ instruction in the central island area, or perhaps our reputation for unique, high level training methodology is spreading... regardless, nary a month goes by without a visitor. It's been a busy month and our writing staff here at the Island Top Team blog have neglected to keep you updated on recent promotions, so there's a bit of catching up to do. After Umesh's matches, Gary was up, and here's where the inability to properly prepare really cost us. Gary Should've been in the weight class below Umesh, but had to sign up for the one above, because there was not enough time to properly cut weight, and we didn't want our teammates competing against one another. Going up against dudes 2 weight classes up after just over 6 months of training is not a recipe for success, and alas, Gary lost in his first match, which is a shame, because he was unable to show the incredible skills he has developed in class, hanging with some of the blue belts that have visited us from out of town, and providing excellent training for Umesh. In fact, a large part of Umesh's success at the worlds was due to having Gary as a frequent training partner in class, so he can claim his fair share because we win or lose as a team. Read More

Island Top Team sent a small crew of competitors to the BJJ World Championships in Long Beach California last week... and by sent we mean our head instructor personally drove them down there. More promotions to announce in the past week or so. Shane earned his first stripe on his blue belt, and Taylor his first stripe on his white belt. Shane distinguished himself again in his most recent competitive performance, but it was his diligence in improving his sweep game and guard passing defense in class that resulted in his latest step up the ranks, and Taylor has displayed remarkable progress in his game, executing some textbook Marcelo Garcia-style crucifix back attacks, in addition to some excellent guard passing. Richard Harlow is blind. And there exists an exceedingly simple way to fix that. He needs to take a pill. The pill in question is a drug therapy to restore function to his optic nerve, which has been ravaged by a rare disease. Due to this rarity, the treatment is not covered by BC's medical plan. Last night several members of Island Top Team attended Richard Harlow's Fight For Sight Night fundraiser and donated generously to this immensely worthy cause.
