ITT 2014 World BJJ Championships Results

June 05, 2014 at 4:24 PM

Professor Rob and 3 competitors made the trek down to Long Beach California to attend the 2014 IBJJF World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships in the last week of May. We talk a great deal about having world class standards at our club, so it was time again to put our money where our mouths are and step on the mats to see if we could hang at the world class level. How'd it go?

Not bad at all:

Dwayne and Rob podium

Dwayne, one of the 4 students who attended the first ever class at Island Top Team, fittingly brought back the first ever worlds medal not just for our club, but for a Nanaimo-trained BJJ practitioner! Dwayne captured bronze with an excellent performance, displaying the sort of technical guard work almost unheard of in his weight class. He lost a razor-thin match to the eventual gold medalist, who went on to dominate his finals opponent, so we feel comfortable saying Dwayne was the second best competitor in this division, and given a few more seconds to work, would've likely gone on to win gold, as he was turning the tide against his semifinal opponent but fell just short of scoring a guard pass as time ran out.

Shane made it to the quarterfinals for the second straight year, this time at purple belt, turning in dominant performances against full time BJJ athletes who at the world level are comparable to most non-elite-competitor black belts. Showing particularly strong movement and technical skills combined with crushing toop game, he continues to be a stellar example of ITT Jiu-Jitsu.

Taylor showed poise and excellent movement, but was derailed by a savvy (read stalling) competitor and some suspect refereeing in his first round match. Despite there being no score and Taylor repeatedly nearly passing the guard, with an equal number of submission attempts, we feel he should've been victorious, but regardless, proved that he belongs at the world level in his belt category.

Another incredible journey comes to a close, but our journey to becoming a world class club continues. Start your own journey to becoming the best version of yourself by joining us at Island Top Team!
