Happy New Year!

What better way to spend New Year's Day than in the company of your teammates while they endeavor to strangle you in the most efficient way possible? That was not the only incentive for Conner, Corey The First, Corey The Second, Dan, Gary, Michael, Paul, and Shane, however, because these paragons of awesomeness also happen to know that the first day of every month is the day the students at Island Top Team get to vote on the training module for that month, and were astute enough to participate in this glorious democratic process. What the hell is a training module, you ask? Oh, sorry, you must train at one of those places where the instructor walks into class, pulls a couple of random techniques out of their, um, hindquarters, and then does the same the next day and the next. Here at Island Top Team we work on a single position for the month, learning the details and intricacies of controlling, escaping and moving in and out of said position so that we can gain a true understanding of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a system of fighting connected by theory and principles, and not just a random collection of 'moves', or techniques. If you don't do it that way at your school, sorry about your luck, but hey, it could be worse... you could be learning BJJ from a blue belt :).
Anywho, the choices for January's module were the mount, the x-guard, and the kimura (yes the kimura is a submission, but if you understand it and all submissions as positions that need to be controlled, your grappling will improve dramatically). The mount won by a landslide, which proves just how much the crew here at Island Top team has embraced the notion of building good fundamentals and concepts as being crucial to creating highly skilled grapplers.
Today also marked the glorious inception of our striking program in the MMA class, because Island Top Team's head instructor doesn't just provide world class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tutelage, but also the kind of highly technical MMA-specific striking coaching you cannot find anywhere else in Nanaimo. Thanks guys for kicking (well, punching, if you want to be pedantic) off the new year, Island Top Team style!
