Boom Goes The Dynamite!

December 13, 2013 at 9:18 PM

In our 1st year of existence, Island Top Team has created 9 BJJ champions. Last Saturday, at the Hard Rock Casino in Port Coquitlam, we added our first MMA championship to that list. Jer Kornelsen, one of several local MMA fighters to join our team recently, taking advantage of our world class instruction to raise their ground game to the next level, used exactly none of the skills he acquired on our mats in his championship bout:

Of course it's somewhat difficult to employ any Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu when you knock your opponent out in 7 seconds, but part of what led to the KO was the confidence Jer developed in his defensive jiu-jitsu skills, which enabled him to throw his hands without fear of his opponent's vaunted bjj brown belt grappling acumen. On top of being incredibly proud of Jer's stellar performance, our head instructor would like to thank Eli, Shane, and Sean, who were his main training partners in the leadup to this fight, and, along with many other members of our team, did everything they could to ensure his preparation. Professor Rob would also like to congratulate John Punt at Impact MMA for forging Jer's formidable striking skills and establishing mixed martial arts in the harbour city. As more fighters continue to work with both our clubs the Nanaimo MMA scene looks to become more dynamic and successful than ever!
