The common description of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that it is a grappling martial art involving the use of throws, takedowns, and ground control positions leading to chokes and joint locks, utilizing principles of leverage to allow a smaller, weaker person to subdue a larger, more powerful opponent.
At Island Top Team we believe a more conceptual understanding of BJJ creates more effective martial artists. The daunting task facing most people new to this martial art is the expectation to not only remember the countless permutations of techniques, endless moves, counters and recounters, but to perform them quickly under stress. What sets us apart from the majority of academies is that we teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu not as a collection of random moves, but as a set of physical principles that govern human movement. Our definition of BJJ is that it is the martial art and science of using frames and levers to manipulate an opponent's alignment (made up of base, posture, and structure) to create control and vulnerability that ultimately leads to submission.
We also believe that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a combative expression of the scientific method, where we formulate a hypothesis and then pressure test it to see if it corresponds to reality. Our hypothesis is that modelling the best practitioners in the world while emphasizing biomechanically correct movements that avoid attributes like strength, flexibility, or athleticism will result in a form of BJJ that can be used by anyone for whatever goal they wish to achieve. Be it fitness, self defense, competition in grappling or mixed martial arts, or simply self improvement, training in martial arts with Island Top Team will give you an insight into reality and an awareness of what makes the human body and mind truly effective.
